The Washington Traffic Safety Survey is a large-scale statewide effort to help provide actionable information to inform the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC)’s mission to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries within the state. The initial implementation of the survey involved more than 10,000 completed surveys across 17 regions among various demographic cohorts in Washington State.
The final survey instrument was designed and validated by Montana State University Center for Health and Safety Culture, WTSC and MDR and contained questions about driving behavior, driving history, pedestrians and bicyclists, driving rules, driving and traffic safety, and opinions and expectations. Data collection involved a multi-mode push-to-web/pen-and-paper personal interview (PAPI) that included both address-based (ABS) and panel samples, with multiple contacts per sampled household. A total of 10,964 individuals provided valid completed surveys.
MDR cleaned, verified and conducted comprehensive data quality checks to ensure the data collected was valid, accurate and of high-quality. The final dataset was weighted to the population by key demographic characteristics to reflect the adult population of Washington.
MDR analyzed the final dataset analyzed the data and worked closely with WTSC to developed a wide range of reports. Deliverables consisted of a comprehensive data compendium, verbatim responses to open ended questions, raw and weighted datasets, technical documentation, a comprehensive research report with key findings, and State and regional level infographics reporting on findings.
